Sister Cynthia Canning, SNJM, has ministered in education and SNJM leadership. In 1994, Sister Cynthia along with SNJM Sisters Rosemary Delaney and Margaret Kennedy founded Next Step Learning Center, in Oakland, California. The center assists youth and adults to earn their high school equivalency, transition to college, and build better lives.

SISTER JULIE: We are in Campbell, California on a Motherhouse Road Trip with the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary and our guests Sister Cynthia Canning and Sister Sally Gunn. We hear from a lot of young people who are like, “Well, I don’t know for sure if this is what I am called to, so I must not be called to this.” Some people know immediately and other people, they do grow into it.
SISTER CYNTHIA: I think I am still growing into it. I really like what you said about, “I think the sisters saw more in my than I saw in myself,” something to that effect. That has been my experience my entire lifetime in this community. The mentoring, the call to leadership roles that I would never have imagined myself being in and most likely would not have been in. I think that’s what we also do in our ministries. One of the themes of our charism, that I love in particular, is the full development of the human person. That’s in the community and it’s in our ministries. That is what we really try to do: to see in people more than they know that they have, and to help that flourish.
